The Altai Mountains sit dead center on the Eurasian Continent. The earliest written records of skiing (from Chinese histories over 2000 years ago) refer to skiers hunting in the Altai Mountains . Skiing’s place of origin long predates written records, going back perhaps 10,ooo years and remains a mystery. The Altai/ Lake Baikal region is considered one of the likely places where skis were first developed.
